Bank technical glitch delays some civil servants salaries

A technical fault at NBS Bank plc has resulted in delayed salary payments for civil servants that bank with the institution, the Ministry of Finance and Economic Affairs has confirmed.

In a statement signed by spokesperson Williams Banda, the ministry assured the affected employees that all February 2025 salaries were processed and transmitted through the Electronic Transfer System as scheduled.

Reads the statement: “The Accountant General’s Department successfully transferred the funds to the Reserve Bank of Malawi for distribution to various commercial banks.

“However, while payments to all other commercial banks have been successfully credited, funds designated for NBS Bank account holders have yet to be reflected in individual accounts.”

NBS Bank has since issued a public notice acknowledging the delay, attributing it to a system-related issue.

The bank did not disclose the exact nature of the technical fault, but assured customers that the matter was resolved and all pending salary transactions were processed.

“We acknowledge that some salaries were processed a few hours later than expected, and the bank sincerely regrets the delay and any inconvenience caused,” reads part of the statement.

Meanwhile, the delay has caused inconveniences for affected civil servants, many of whom rely on timely salary payments to meet financial obligations.
